Pebeo Fabric and Leather Paints Intro with The Paint Spot

Pebeo Fabric and Leather Painting Live Session

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, I gave a lively fabric and leather painting Zoom demonstration presented with Kim and her amazing followers at The Paint Spot in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada sponsored by Pebeo Paints!

During the session I gave tips and tricks for working with Pebeo's Setacolor Light (transparent), Opaque and Special Effects Fabric Paints, Marbling Paints for both fabric and paper applications, and the main star of the show... Pebeo's NEW Setacolor Cuir Leather Paints, Markers, Mediums and Varnishes.

Some of my favorite surfaces to paint on are reclaimed or recycled items. During this demo I showed how to paint on recycled vintage leather wallets, a pair of old leather tennis shoes, leather cut-off scraps and a thrift store leather purse.

If you are in Canada, I encourage you to visit The Paint Spot in Edmonton, or shop their online store for Pebeo paints: https://paintspot.ca/?s=Pebeo+fabric+leather&post_type=product&dgwt_wcas=1

Wishing a huge THANK YOU to Pebeo North America for sponsoring me to share this fun fabric and leather painting information and for providing the fantastic paints for the show-n-tells.

Leather Painting Project Tips

Here are some tips I shared about the Pebeo Leather Paints, Markers and Mediums during the live demonstration:

STEP 1 - Prepare the Leather or Pleather Surface

  • It can be helpful to clean scuffs or dirt off of a leather or pleather (artificial leather) item with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser before moving on to Deglazing the leather / pleather surface for painting.

  • Wear gloves when using the leather / pleather Preparer & Deglazer medium no. 1. I put a double glove on my dominant hand because the medium can seep through only one layer of nitrile glove.

  • I prefer to use Cotton Squares with the Preparer & Deglazer medium rather than paper towels, although you can use paper towels. Better than a paper towel is using a spun blue disposable shop-towel.

  • The Preparer & Deglazer has a strong smell; use it in a well ventilated area or outside.

  • Gather multiple leather items to prepare all at once.

  • Use the Preparer & Deglazer on an inconspicuous area of the leather or pleather item to be sure it is not too strong for the surface (such as removing the color or making the surface rough). If the Preparer & Deglazer appears to be too strong for the item surface, try using rubbing alcohol to clean the item surface instead.

STEP 2 - Painting and Other Mediums on Leather

Setacolor Cuir Leather Paint Colors

  • The Setacolor Cuir Leather paint colors can be shaken to mix, then after removing the bottle lid, flip it over and it is easy to pull paint from the inside of the lid while the top of the lid covers the open bottle.

  • The Setacolor Cuir Leather paint colors can be mixed with one another to create infinite colors. I usually mix my colors on a paper or plastic plate or on palette paper.

  • The Setacolor Cuir Leather paint colors that include mica and glitter should first be stirred with a stick, then they can be shaken. These include Metallic Gold, Silver and Bronze; Glitter Gold, Silver and Rainbow Iridescent; and Duo Blue/Green, Yellow/Violet and Pink/Blue.

  • For the Duo Cuir Leather paint colors, the first color is the mass tone that dominates when painted on a white or light background and the second color appears more when painted on a dark surface.

  • Allow at least 15 minutes between coats.

  • I generally apply 2-3 coats of paint to get full coverage.

    Setacolor Cuir Leather Paint Markers

  • The 10 colors of Setacolor Cuir Leather Markers are pump type. Shake the markers well before pumping the tip to get the paint well mixed.

  • I like to outline my designs with a marker color similar or the same as the color paint I will be putting on top to fill in the outline.

  • While the marker lines are fresh, they can be scrubbed off with a water soaked brush if a mistake is made in the drawing. Allow the surface to fully dry before going over the area with marker again.

  • It can be helpful to have a spare pack of nibs on hand in case a marker nib gets damaged. Also, when a marker is finished, if the nib is still good, remove it, rinse and save as a spare.

    Setacolor Cuir Leather Thinner Medium

  • Thinner Medium no. 2 can be used to thin the Cuir Leather Paints. I like to use this thinner to create glazes with the paint colors instead of water, which helps to maintain cohesion of the paint on the leather / pleather.

  • Thinner Medium no. 2 can be used 1:1 (50%/50%) paint to thinner for use in an Airbrush.

    Setacolor Cuir Leather Masking Fluid

  • When using Setacolor Cuir Leather Masking Fluid, it can be applied with silicon tipped tools or use an old / cheap brush to apply.

  • If a mistake is made when applying Masking Fluid, wait for the masking fluid to dry, then roll over the surface and throw away the latex ball that comes off. Then, reapply the Masking Fluid.

  • Clean the brush or silicon tip tool in a separate small water container. Then, use a paper towel to soak up the Masking Fluid infused water and throw it into the trash. DO NOT THROW THE MASKING FLUID CLEANING WATER DOWN YOUR SINK!

  • Be sure the Masking Fluid is fully dry before coating with at least 2 coats of paint.

  • I allow the paint over the Masking Fluid to dry for up to 24 hours, then remove the masking fluid design with a golden Rubber Cement Adhesive Eraser.

  • After removing the Masking Fluid, I gently use the flat side of an Exacto knife to clean up any rough edges.

    Setacolor Cuir Leather Glue

  • Use the Setacolor Cuir Leather Glue to glue together pieces of leather. It can also be used to glue together cotton, polyester and other fabrics, as well as attach pearls, powers, etc. to leather and other fabrics.

  • It is advised to wear gloves when applying the glue since contact may cause an allergic reaction.

STEP 3 - Varnish Finish Coating

  • I like to dry my painted items for up to 3 days before applying a Setacolor Cuir Leather Varnish finishing protective coating.

  • The Gloss and Matt-Satin Varnishes appear milky when wet, but will dry clear.

  • It is recommended to start with 1 to 2 coats of Gloss Varnish to seal the leather surface. If a more satin or matte finish is desired, carefully mix with a stick the Matt-Satin Varnish to assure the matting agent is thoroughly mixed into the varnish solution and apply 1 to 3 coats of the Matt-Satin Varnish until the desired finish is achieved.

  • I like to use a soft fan brush to apply varnish .
