In this article, I demonstrate how to warm up with whimsical faces and then use a mixed media approach with acrylic paints, 3-D paint effects and collage papers to create fun dimensional artworks as unique as the artist! This was a live painting session.

Blind Contour Drawing Exercise
One of the fun warm up exercises I shared during this workshop was to do Blind Contour drawing of faces.

This involves looking at someone in person or at a photograph or magazine page person, then drawing what is seen with a pen or pencil while only looking at the person or picture and not at the paper on which the image is being drawn. In addition, only use one continuous stroke to create the image, not lifting the drawing pen or pencil from the paper surface.
This blind contour drawing technique can be used for practice with any observed object or objects, including animals, tools, outdoor scenery, and more.

It’s a simple technique that only requires a piece of paper and writing instrument to do and helps synchronize the artist’s sight or imagination with hand motor skill. Plus, this fun project can be done with folks of any age, as long as they can see or imagine objects and hold a pen or pencil.
I guarantee there will be giggles or outright laughter when looking at the resulting drawings!!! 😀😂
